Workshop HERMES_GR Kuwait

@ocollado , this issue is to track the progress of preparing the material and performing the necessary testing for the HERMES_GR Kuwait workshop.

The goals are:

1. Successfully execute HERMES_GR in the virtual machine

For this step, you should copy the auxiliar files somewhere in /esarchive to avoid having to use too much space in the VM. The other needed input files (e.g., EI_config, HERMES config, profiles, etc...) should be copied in the VM. I propose that for the testing purposes you consider the d01 configuration (/gpfs/scratch/bsc32/bsc143869/hermes_gr/Kuwait/conf/hermes_d1.conf), but instead of using the vertical_description = <input_dir>/domains/d01/WRFChem_d01_39layers_vertical_description.csv, consider the following simplified vertical description file:

2. Define HERMES_GR exercises

For all exercises, we will consider the D01 domain. Check the size of the final output files, so that we can have an estimation of how much space we will end using.

First exercise: execute HERMES_GR using the same config as the one proposed for the testing of HERMES_GR in the VM (so hermes_d1.conf and consider the simplified vertical description file)

Second exercise: same as first, but replacing CAMS-GLOB-ANT by CORSO point source emissions for the energy sector. So, in practical terms, using the /gpfs/scratch/bsc32/bsc143869/hermes_gr/Kuwait/conf/hermes_d1_CORSO.conf config file (but also considering the simplified vertical description file)

Third exercise: same as the first one, but

  • Deactivating the shipping sector
  • Masking out all emissions from Kuwait
  • Decreasing the energy emissions from Saudi Arabia by a factor of 0.5

You will have to create the needed config files for this exercise

Fourth exercise: same as the first one, but

  • Assigns a flat hourly profile to road transport emissions
  • Assigns a vertical profile to energy emissions that assumes that all emissions are occurring between 200 and 300m

You will have to create the needed config files/input files for this exercise

Fifht exercise: same as the first one, but introduing an error that makes HERMES_GR crashes and we need to check the logs to understand what's happening. I leave it to you to decide which error.

3. Prepare and test training material for each exercise

Remember to always execute HERMES_GR with two cpus, so all the participants can execute at the same time without collapsing the VM. Check the execution times to finish each exercise.

4. Prepare slides for the training

I started the preparation of the slides. Focus on completing the material from "HERMES_GR: Hands-on session" onwards. Remember it is good to go step by step, no rush, and also to propose to check log outs and thinks like that. You can find the slides here:
